Clean Streets Program |

“Clean Streets" is a program administered by the State of
New Jersey through which communities raise money to help preserve their open
space by removing litter from their streets. In West Windsor, the program is
organized and conducted by FOWWOS. As citizens work to pick up litter, the
Township provides FOWWOS with funds according to the time they spend. These
funds are used by FOWWOS to further its land preservation efforts. The Township,
in turn, is then reimbursed an equal amount through a grant from the State
program. For each hour a person 16 years of age or older volunteers to collect
litter from our streets and parks, FOWWOS will receive $10.00 from the Township,
and for each hour a person under 16 years of age participates, FOWWOS will
receive $5.00.
In West Windsor, the program has been very successful
thanks to the cooperation of the Township government and participating groups,
such as the Boy scouts, the Berrien City Neighborhood Association, and other
community organizations, as well as individual citizens. The effort has included
special "Clean Streets Weekends," as well as ongoing efforts throughout the year
involving any volunteers who wish to participate. The Clean Streets Program offers a great opportunity to obtain funds for the purpose of acquiring open space, while at the same time cleaning up our community. If you or your group can help with the FOWWOS Clean Streets Program, please let us know. This is another way to raise money to help save open space. For details, please call Mike Schuit at 799-4868. Only Township (not county or state) streets and parks should have litter collected. Please use gloves and a trash bag when collecting litter. Be particularly careful of traffic on busy streets.
